Joel Osteen Today 6 JANUARY 2025 Devotional Message
Today’s Topic: Built Any Altars Lately?
Scripture: Jacob built an altar there and named the place El-bethel (which means “God of Bethel”), because God had appeared to him there when he was fleeing from his brother, Esau. – Genesis 35:7, NLT
Today’s Word
As Jacob did in today’s Scripture, we can all look back in life and see times when God made a way. We knew it was His hand that protected us from a car crash, promoted us when we didn’t deserve it, brought us through a loss. Those weren’t just coincidences. In the Old Testament, when these things happened, people took time to build an altar to thank God for what He had done.
They would look back at those altars, and that was fuel for their faith. They knew that if He did it back then, He would do it again. We should still be building altars today. It’s easy to get so busy that we don’t recognize the blessing of God.
But when you take time to acknowledge what God has done, you recognize He brought you safely through a sickness, gave you that person to love, opened a door that’s taken you further than you ever imagined. When you pause to say, “God, I recognize this is Your goodness. Thank You for Your favor and mercy,” that’s building an altar.
Prayer For Today
“Father, thank You for the strength that rises within me whenever I remember what You have done in my life. Thank You for the countless times You made a way when it seemed there was no way and You opened doors that seemed closed. I will build my altars and remember Your goodness. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.”
INSPIRATIONAL MESSAGE: Here’s the key: the blessing did not come from people so it cannot be taken away by people. You are blessed in the city and blessed in the country. You are blessed going in and blessed coming out. That means you are blessed when things are going your way and blessed when they’re not going your way. You’re blessed in the palace and blessed in the pit. You are blessed when people are good to you and blessed when they’re trying to stop you.
Are you beating yourself up for past mistakes, not passionate about life, not pursuing dreams? The enemy keeps reminding you of those self-inflicted wounds: “You knew better. You blew it. It’s your own fault.” Next time he comes showing that scar, trying to make you feel guilty, turn it around: “This scar reminds me of the mercy of God. It reminds me that I’m redeemed and restored.”
